Dr. Hawkins is a good professor, who puts effort into his class and the students. This class isn't the easiest, but he does a good job with explanations and teaching the material. Labs are a major part of the grade, and are pretty straightforward. He is always around and helpful. Take this class with him

Dr. Hawkins is AMAZING. Each class is a powerpoint, but he tries to make it interesting and funny. It's a lab class, but the "labs" are like worksheets that cover stuff that you've just learned - there's no separate lab time. The best part is, if you don't know the answer or you aren't sure, go to his office during office hours and he'll help you get through it and pretty much give you the answer. If you aren't sure if your answer is right, ask him and he'll tell you, and guide you to the right answer/give it to you. I got an A on every single lab this way... His tests can be difficult if you don't study, but I only had to study for an hour or so and got an A on every one. Come on, people, this is college. For a college class, that's pretty good. TAKE HIM! I'd recommend him to anyone, even you, a complete stranger. :D

Hawkins is probably one of my professors by far. His class was enjoyable and didn't bore me. I texted most of it and didn't pay much attention but it was still fun. Its mostly powerpoint notes in class and then you have a lab due maybe once every two weeks... he always seemed to push them back but they were pretty simple and his grading is pretty easy. There were about 3 tests which included the midterm and final. The good thing about those were that he lets you take an individual test and then a group test which lets you do the test again and work with the people around you and whatever you scored off the group test 15% of it was put towards your individual grade which raised my grade from a C to a B. I barely did any work or tried at all and got away with a B-, so if you work hard you can easily get an A. Btw I never needed the book at all!!!! Nothing is from it all is from the notes.

I thought he was a very good professor. His classes were interesting. He doesn't ask very much of you, just show up. You have to do 3 Issue Papers, a poster project, and there are about 2-3 group assignments that you do in class. I've never had to read in his class either, his notes and what he talks about pretty much cover what will be on the test. He also puts a lot of graphs and visuals on the tests too. I would definitely recommend him.

Dr. Hawkins is by far one of the best professors at Ship. If you can take Hawkins for any science class do it. He finds ways to make class interesting and he knows his stuff. If you actually go to class, copy the notes, and pay attention somewhat you'll get a good grade in his class.

I didn't think I'd like this class, but he made it fun for me! He is an awesome professor, younger so he's much more on our level. He does give out assignments that do take effort, but if you don't mind doing a little work every now and then, then you will love this class. All his notes are on powerpoint, but he doesn't let you access them online, so there is a lot of notetaking in class. He's very fair grader and if you take notes and pay attention you won't have a problem. Highly Recommended!

For a gen ed Earth Science class, I really enjoyed it! Dr. Hawkins really knows his stuff, and his tests and homework really are not all that hard if you pay attention in class, read the book if you don't understand the concepts, and actually apply yourself to the work. I highly recommend him!

I was never into sciences and earth stuff but after taking his class, I loved it. I learned so much in his class. He gives you notes every class and for his tests, he gives you a study guide and all you have to do is study the notes. They were so easy. Plus, this guy barely takes attendance. He does in the beginning of the class but after a couple weeks, Never. I would definitaly take him again if I could.

A really great prof. He always involves the students asking: what is this what is that, and you dont feel stupid bc he asks everyone and people dont know the answer a lot of the time. We took 1 field trip that was ok and had to monitor a stream for like 2 months and do a report, that was ok too. He doesnt give multiple choice tests but the tests are all from lecture- you dont have to use the book. He takes attendance at the beginning, but stops after a while. You can always miss and get the notes from someone and you'll be fine.

Dr. hawkins was a very good teacher, he's real down to earth and seems to really care about the students learning, he asks a lot of questions in class and will randomly call on people frequently so you'll need to be awake but you dont even have to read a book for him he puts all the notes you need up on power point, his only downfall is that his tests are not multiple choice but all short answer but if you study the notes you'll be fine

Professor Hawkins is an excellent teacher, you will actually learn something without doing much work! His tests are fairly easy as long as you go to class, you can probably still get a good grade if you miss a couple. He has a great sense of humor and wants you to learn.

I took Hawkins this semester based off of the reviews on this site.. What a mistake! As a senior, with 300-400 level classes for the rest of my schedule, I was able to pass all those will 95-100%. Meanwhile, I struggled through this 100 level elective. Hawkins seemed like a nice guy at first. He starts off the semester by saying he understands that not one of us is probably there to become a meteorologists and that it's just a gen ed.. then he proceeds to teach the class like we're all going to have a full time job on the 5 o'clock news as a weatherman/weatherwoman by the end of the semester. When I checked exam averages for the class on D2L, majority of my peers fell between 55-75%. One of my classmates who is a biology major with a 4.0 (prior to this class) told me they failed all the exams with a 58 or lower. The only reason I didn't fail the course is because of attendance and lab grades. The exams have trick questions and sometimes there is content on there that is not covered in class or part of the course curriculum. It's just bad news all around. Maybe he used to be better when he first started, but he's getting sloppy. Also not willing to put anything on to D2L because of "copyright infringements", so take all of your own notes for every class. Last few weeks are group projects that he grades extremely hard on. Some of the top presenters in our class were getting B's and C's. Oh, and your tested on the group presentation content on the final. So... try to take notes and memorize 30+ powerpoints the week before finals that are not available online on content that he never taught himself. Just avoid this class at all costs.

I want to give credit where credit is due and say that Dr. Hawkins is a nice guy. However, his ESS 111 class was in no way, shape, or form a 100 level GenED class. His lectures aren't too bad and the tests aren't impossible, but the lab packet that you have to buy and complete throughout the semester is HORRIBLE....HORRIBLE! After only a few lectures, he wants you to draw weather fronts and pressure systems on maps and be super precise. I believe that he thinks by him standing up in the front of the class every morning and spewing out the weather report that somehow we will know how to do this advanced stuff. Kids are already starting to give up and not come to class and he is scratching his head and wondering why. I'll tell you why... It's because you are scaring people off...duh! Real talk, don't pick this class for a GenED, take basket weaving or something where you're not doing atmospheric physics.

He is not accommodating at all. This is the professor who demands to see the obituary if someone you know dies and you miss class. That should say enough about him and his character. He forgets what kind of class he's teaching; a gen ed class. I struggled throughout the semester because his tests are incredibly hard; he gives you notes, yet his tests and labs (out of class homework assignments) are nothing based on the notes you take in class. Just to give you an idea, there are about 30-35 students in my class: 11 people got F's and 6 people got D's on the last exam. The average was a 70%. Yet Hawkins thinks this was a great exam! This guy is crazy and I would never recommend him to anyone.

His class wasn't so bad to start off with, but it went down hill quick.
Plain and simple, ALL of his tests were really hard. I failed all of them with studying, taking notes, asking questions and listening.
BUT projects and little assignments helped make up for the tests.
Do every assignment well and completed and you SHOULD pass.
Take notes, he doesn't have anything on blackboard. And DONT buy his book. You never once use it.
-If possible, talk to other people in the class about grades and tests and such.
One BIG MISTAKE: I'm slightly outspoken, once mentioned Al Gore and his stupid movie and how it was BS and I was like blacklisted by him for the rest of the semester.
He gave me low grades on projects that I spent hours and hours on ( which I knew weren't total crap) and then didn't want to help me at all and screwed me over.

I took this class for a gen. ed and it was the hardest class of my life. He is a really nice guy and is really into what he does, but when it comes to tests its ridiculous. It's multiple choice, but it is really difficult. We also have a few homework assignments that are extremely hard. If you are just taking this class for a general ed, avoid him!

This guy may be good within his major but as for teaching a gened it's crazy. His test was multiple choice and is fine but he asks detailed questions and gives vague notes so you're on your own and hoping you can get the information from the book. He gave this huge project where you had to type in manually into excel every hour the weather patters for all semester, ended up being more than 1500 rows. It was way too much work for a dumb gened. I studied and worked more for this class than a 400 level econ. Avoid this guy for geneds!!!

He is a good teacher, except for the fact that the tests are really hard. The class isnt too boring and is rather easy. You get projects to do but they are not that hard, they actually help your grade. The worst part of this class are the tests, they are hard.

Hawkins is not too bad of a guy. His classes can be kind of boring but what classes can't. I found his tests very difficult and the information hard to understand, which is why I'm rating him neutral. We also had to do "worksheet labs," which I guess is good sine it counts as a lab class, but I felt like I was in high school again, doing busy-work. I would recommend taking him if you already have knowledge in earth science.

Dr. Hawkins is a really great prof! He tries to help his students anyway he can so they'll better understand the class. I enjoyed his class but at times it was confusing b/c he taught some things as if people already knew the basics which many did not. However he's a really nice guy so if I had the chance I'd take him again... ask more questions =/
