the lounge is not the only thing that sucks about being a commuter at ship. I think the parking lots are a. too few b. too cramped and c. too far away. Last time I checked we pay good money to come here to school, and yet the staff get to park much closer in lots that are big enough that you don't have to back up and pull forward 3 times to get out of. lets say you were employed at a grocery store. I would imagine that you would have to park the furthest away to allow the paying customers to have the front spaces. On top of the fact that we are the "customers" faculty only has to pay a dollar for their stickers. Do you ever notice that every time we have a construction project it is a commuter lot that gets shut down?? When I first came to ship the preforming arts center, was a commuter parking lot. and now the one by mowery is closed?? I'm calling bullshit. Also when ship does new freshman schedules you would think they could look and see that a new student is a commuter who lives 45 mins away and schedule his/her classes a little closer together than having a 5 hour break two days a week. This happened to both me and my fiancee. At the price of gas it isn't worth it to drive back home, but yet if you are done with your homework staying on campus with nothing to do kinda sucks. If there were a lounge with a few couches, some tables, maybe a fridge and a microwave oh and some lockers in a centrally located area that would take away some of the inconvience.

I agree with the parking issue and the issue of there needs to be a lounge. I'm not picky, just a place to go when there is a break between classes. As a new student, I felt that even orientation was a waste for commuters. Why not have a seperate orientation for the commuters.

And what's up with the commuter lots being the last place on campus to get snow and ice removed? Obviously the commuters are going to need the parking lot more than someone who parks in a resident lot, I don't even need a lounge, I just want the admin. to use a little common sense...

i feel for you guys. i'm a freshman and i was commuting last semester until i decided to live on campus. yes, commuting was cheaper for gas (at the time) but then there was all the oil changes and tire rotations and gen. main. that i didnt account for. agreed, the lots should be snow plowed but they did the same crap at my high school so i could care less. if i get into a wreck i'll blame the school. A lounge, good call. it's one thing for a commuter to have back to back classes.. and its another for them to have a long break inbetween. i dealt with it last semester but i usually went to work, but having aplace that they [commuters] can call their "own" would be nice.. i could care less, but my brother will be doing it next year and i want him to enjoy it.
and btw, the closed the lot next to McClean to make room for the faculty. and blocked off half of the one by Seavers and Mowrey for construction. what are they doing??? making more cafeteria space at reisner when they know very well that everyone goes to kriner. |

I graduated from Ship in 2004 and I commuted for 3 of my 4 years and its amazing that some of the things that were most frustrating to me are still being encountered. I purposefully selected classes that were back to back and had at least 2 classes each day. I found it was very easy to talk myself into going home if I had more then an hour break between classes. Sure, there's the computer lab in Grove and Jazzman's, but sometimes a place that I could have went to just relax and do work or whatever would have definitely been beneficial.
Ship commuters definitely need to band together to get some resolve. You might want to consider taking a petition to the student government -- I never did figure out what exactly it was that they did anyways, but this would be the first step in trying to get something.
Good luck Ship commuters -- and hang in there -- you only have to deal with it for a few years and then it's just a distant memory. |

Yup, same here. I work full time and go to Ship full time, so I feel your pain. I commute an hour and 1/2 to school directly from work 5 days a week and my husband drives me when there is snow. We got up here last week only to find out that after we made the drive from our house Ship was closed. I would agree about the lounge, but honestly, I wouldn't use it. I don't know anyone here, so I end up hanging out or sleeping in my car between classes or before...etc. I do have to say that the administration certainly doesn't keep us in mind during winter weather. They say "use your own judgement..." blah, blah. to drive up here, but when professors like the ones I have make class attendance and participation 20%of your grade, I don't see how missing 1 class is possible? Isn't is in your best interest to risk your neck so you can pass the stupid class and graduate? Good Grief! These people need a major head check.

Seriously. I commute from MD, which means I pay an extra couple of thousand dollars just for tuition. You would think that with all that extra money, Ship could afford to have a little more in the way of commuter comforts. Parking is the worst here! With more construction taking up valuable parking spots (which were already limited) we have to fight it out amongst ourselves for the best spots. I almost got plowed into as I was trying to park outside of Wright hall the other day! This is maddness!
I understand that with all the projects going on, money is probably tight for things like fixing up campus for commuters. However, there are a few ways that ship could help us! what about opening up some of the faculty parking for commuter use? There are tons of faculty spots left open...spots that commuters could use. |

In the corner of Naugle there is a lounge for Commuters, older students and so on. It is called the Non-Traditional Student Lounge. Over the next 2 years Shippensburg University plans on adding parking for Commuters, it just takes time. Have you people spoken with President Ruud, who has an open door policy and could tell you his plans? Probably not. Have you asked the Commuter Chair on the Student Govenment? Probably not. Theres a longe, with a fridge, tv, couches, places to lay down, places to do ironing for clothes needed for presentations...

I am a non-traditional student (and also a commuter), and I visited that lounge you mentioned. I was never told that it was a commuter lounge, in fact the people who introduced the lounge to me suggested that it was just for non-trads who wanted to get away from the "kids" (most commuters are not non-traditional). It is a nice idea, but very small and antiquated. I think they must have used that area to dump all of the outdated computers and furniture. And if more than 3 or 4 people were in there at once, they would be stepping on each other. There is no way that all of the commuters could use this lounge. But I do hope that you are more correct in your statement about current plans to increase commuter parking.

Don't forget Ron Zook's Lounge in the CUB. It has fruit punch and trays full of zookies you can gobble down in between classes, and sometimes it has top-rate live musical acts such as Nick Staver of Ledbetter Heights, Independence Drive, and acoustic guitar maestro Dave Plumjob. I'm a commuter and Ron Zook's Lounge is where I always go between classes.

I'm really sorry for all of you commuters. I have an idea that would make this problem vanish. How about all of you grow up and live on campus and not with mommy and daddy. I know you will all miss your brothers and sisters and not to forget all of your high school buddies, but how about we try and move on. I'm sorry you all can't have a lounge to hide in from the people who actually go to college and are "real" college students. Don't get me wrong, I know there are some people who have families and are doing this part time and I agree with them. For the rest of you who work hours away and commute and are complaining, everyone of you needs to shut it. There are plenty of places to work around here so don't even try to say you have a great job at home. I know you won't get your nice home cooked meal at 5 every night and won't be able to talk about your day at the dinner table, try and be like a real college kid and hit the beer pong table. If you can't tell I hate commuters!!!!!

"A NON COMMUTER" talks about commuters having to live with mommy and daddy, while he takes all of his mommy and daddy's money to be a tool and go to college to brag about playing beer pong, as if it's some kind of impressive life accomplishment. I'm not a commuter but I don't have a problem with them. In a few years they will be laughing at A NON COMMUTER, aka CHODE TOOL, when they're raking it in at a "real" job because they know the value of hard work, while he's working for mommy and daddy's because no "real" job will hire his ass, unless hitting the beer pong table is a required job skill. What a clown. That non-commuting tool probably sucks at beer pong anyway...

"Try to be a real college kid and hit the beer pong table". Harsh words from a harsh douche. You're probably one of those fraternity pussies that pledged at some frat house and spent more time giving your "brothers" blowjobs and cleaning up after them than you did studying. You are talking shit about commuters eating a "home cooked meal" 5 nights a week. Tell me how that differs from Mommy and Daddy paying for your fat ass to eat at Reisner or Kriner 15 times a week. Chode. Grow up Kiddie.

My friends I agree with the Chode. Commuters need to quit living in the past and not live at home. The reason being is because you can still work around shippensburg and go to school. It doesent matter if mommy and daddy are paying for you or not, thats not the issue. The point he is trying to make is that most of you commuters will have to take out loans reguardless and the amount of gas u pay to commute everyday would pay for your living expenses. Don't try to say that stuff to make up for your situation compared to his. If he's rich or poor he is still buying into the college system alot better than u guys. If you have to commute do it, but try and be a part of the college system if you can. Thats the way to get the most out of college. At least stay for the thursday, friday, or saturday parties!

Nice try douchebag, but the reason you agree with the chode is because you ARE the chode. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you're the same person as "A NON COMMUTER", and it also doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you were offended after being called out for the horse's ass you truly are and had to post again under a different name. "Understanding of Commuters"?? First of all why would you post as that name when all you're doing is talking trash on them? And actually, even if you're spending $100 on gas driving to school every week it still wouldn't come close to what you pay to live on campus. I never imagined there existed a douche who had such a big problem with commuters, but apparently I was wrong. "Buying into the college system"... haha what a joke, what the hell are you talking about? Playing beer pong isn't the only way to buy into the system, you troll. Keep bragging about how you're such a crazy partier, blah blah blah how many times have we all heard people say that BS... You're the definition of a booze brag, and most of the time they are the ones who only just started drinking. Oh well, maybe if you're lucky someday, one of these commuters driving to school will toss you a quarter along the side of the road as you peer out of your cardboard box and keep doing what you say you do best - sippin' on that booze. The only difference is instead of a red plastic cup it will be out of a brown paper bag.

Just keep doing what your doin guys. I guess I was harsh on what i said before. Most of you just won't understand what your missing out on. Most people that go to state schools don't have much money like me. You were wrong about me having a ton of money, or having mommy and daddy paying for me. In a nicer way to put it, you guys are missing out on what college is all about. Not just drinking and all of that, but just being able to hang out with all of the people you meet here in the college setting. Sorry if I offended all of you, but man you guys really are making tough decisions. Ive been here one year and have tons of memories that you will be missing out on because your not here all the time to experience it. O by the way I'm not failing out of school because I party so much. Deans list was obtained while living here. It just sucks knowing how many people are enrolled here but arn't here to go out and party. It's not all about partying, believe me I know! So you need to stop using that as an excuse to make fun of me. Thats just what people do in college, doesn't mean your going to fail out and be on the street just cause of that. Probably don't agree at all but it's amazing how 1 year living at a college and not at home is different and exciting. Just get buck and go D1, D2 in our case but its just a saying.

So while a few of you seem to think that commuters live at home with their moms and dads and have everything handed to them, that couldn't be further from the truth. I lived on campus last year and it is almost impossible to get anything done with the noise and distractions there. I live in my OWN apartment with two other commuters. Neither of us live with our parents. Have you even looked around Ship?? Most students who live off campus are living in apartments with other kids. I know my roomates and I and pretty much our entire apartment complex are all Ship students living with each other. We buy and cook our own food, have jobs, and do school. So it is not fair to say that most live with parents. Ever tried being a commuter? It's frustrating to not have parking or a place to go between classes that is convenient and accessible. The parking lots are cramped and way too far away from everything. There is no where near enough parking for all the commuters Ship has. Just a decent parking lot somewhere central to campus would be nice for those of us who usually are rushing off to work right from classes.

Hey I'm a commuter. Are you guys really telling me that I don't have a building where I can hang otu with all of you commuters? That was the fucking reason that I decided to go to ship. I wanted to have a random building that I could show up at any time and reminise with my fellow commuters. I was considering making numerous sandwhiches with mayo smeared sloppily all over it and give it to anyone who wanted one. My dream is now over. If anyone can find a tent or building that we can all go to let me know. I am going to go to Grove Hall and write a lot of stories until then. Does anyone know if there is any ink left in the computer labs there? There was a dirty rumor going around that due to the tomato shortatge they can no longer make orange ink. I guess for some reason you need those tender vegies to make ink spray out of the very small nauzles. I need a ride if anyone can get me one. Sorry to get off topic but Hanna Montana is on tv and I cant seem to stop looking at her undeveloped Sweater Puppets. I'd fuck her though, but hey who woulden't. I would forget to use a condom though and it would hurt injecting in her w/o her piss. As you can see the point I am trying to make is that I need a place to hang out with my commuters. God I wish I had a random room to hang out with all of you like you all want. That way we can all be alone and play heads up 7 up anytime. We can talk about how are GPA's are and wish we would have just studied ten more minutes to get 3 more questions right. Everyone let me know as soon as you know details on that room we can sit in together and make sure all of us get to class on time. I have a pair of twin turbo go-carts if anyone is interested in renting them. Hopefully you all will understand how much better I will make this room we will be in together. If for some reason you need someone to stay after and clean up chalk off the board I will. I will understand if some falls on the floor too. As long as we can have this room to sit in together I am down. My name is toby evans if anyone wants to call me at 8675309. If you see me on campus I am roughly 5"3 pale skin and balding severly. I will be a freshman this comming fall 2008 and hhope that we can all find this room to get away from the outside world. should we have a dress code so that way we are better than everyone else. I talked to my mom and she is willing to have sex with the person who can get us this random room to sit in together. Just to let you all know that means I am included in this so I can possibly have sex with her too. Bring your A game. I got a 2.5 in high school which isin't bad because I do have social problems and ran away from school everyday the school bell rang. I am willing to pay anyone who who would be down with walking me to class and back to our commuter room inbetween classes. Who knows my friends, this may be a far-fetched dream but if we can make this happen I will bring plenty of quarters if we have a snack machine. But let me get this straight with all of you, I will not provide the snack machine! I am willing to help carry it in from any location as long as gloves are provided. If for some reason we break the glass I know a guy who specializes in fixing snack machine glass. I am sorry but that is all I can do. I think I am offering plenty to our random room. I almost forgot the most important thing, make sure our room is on the first floor. This guy is in a wheelchair. Push Push Push me, but not to fast, or I will craw out and punch your ass.
