New user Tutorial

Welcome to the new user tutorial. Use the links below to learn a little bit about how you can use BookBay to buy and sell your textbooks.

Learned enough?

What is BookBay?

  • BookBay is a concept thought up by 4 Juniors that were tired of feeling ripped off from the prices at the University Bookstore. They figured, "we buy books from the bookstore for $80 each, and sell them back for $20 each (if we're lucky!). Then we go and buy books for the next semester for $80 each again... that's a big loss! But what if we eliminated the middle man?..."

  • So BookBay was born. Using the site, students can sell their books to next year's students for more money than selling them back to the store. Meanwhile, those people needing those books will be able to buy them here for less than at the bookstore. It's a win-win situation!

  • An example: Joe bought his Financial Accounting book for $90 at the store for his first semester. At the end of the semester, he didn't need the book anymore, and decided to sell it. The bookstore would only offer him $20 for the book. So he decided to use BookBay. He offered it up for auction for $40, and waited for someone to bid on it. Sally, on the other hand, has scheduled Financial Accounting for the next semester. She sees that the book costs $90 at the bookstore. She decides to try BookBay instead. Searching for the book brings her to Joe's $40 offer. She jumps at the offer, bidding $40 for it. No one else bids on it, and she wins the book! They arrange to meet, exchange the money for the book, and they've both made more money than using the bookstore!

  • It is our hope that the students of Ship will use this service in a positive way... we think we can save people a lot of money. All that you have to do is use it!

  • Next, gather all the information about the book you are selling.

  • Third, go to the Sell a Book page and fill out the form there. Remember, the more information you enter, the more likely it is that someone will find your book and bid on it.

    Bidding on Books

    1. First, you'll need to Register, if you haven't already done so.
    2. Carefully look over the item you're bidding on. The "current price" is how much the book is selling for at that time.
    3. Enter your bid in the Bid box at the bottom of the item description page. The lowest minimum bid will already be filled into the box. You can make this value higher if you wish, to discourage others from bidding on the same book.
    4. Review your bid carefully before hitting the "Bid on Item" button. Once you place your bid, you will not be able to retract it!
    5. You will be re-directed to your "My BookBay" page, where you should see the book you just bid on under "Books I am bidding on." Check this page often to make sure you are still the high bidder! If you get out-bid and the auction ends, you won't win the book!
